Role Overview
An established civil infrastructure contractor is seeking an experienced Working Foreman – Civil / Earthworks to lead excavation and grading crews while actively performing the work. This is a hands-on leadership role that works closely with a Site Supervisor or Superintendent, depending on project size.
The Working Foreman is responsible for driving daily production from within the crew, operating equipment as required, maintaining safety and quality standards, and ensuring work is completed according to drawings and specifications.

Key Responsibilities
Hands-On Leadership & Execution
Work side-by-side with operators and labourers performing excavation, grading, stripping, backfill, and compaction
Operate heavy equipment as required (excavators, dozers, loaders, compactors, etc.)
Set daily work pace, push productivity, and lead by example
Train and mentor new crew members on proper techniques and expectations
Production Tracking & Reporting
Measure and accurately record daily production quantities (cut/fill volumes, areas graded, compaction, stripping)
Track manpower, equipment usage, and production challenges
Review and approve crew timesheets and submit daily production information to the Supervisor
Coordination, Tools & Equipment
Assist with ordering trucks, materials, and equipment to support daily operations
Coordinate tools, attachments, and equipment required for the work
Ensure equipment is maintained, inspected daily, and operated responsibly
Identify maintenance issues early and report them promptly
Quality, Layout & Technology
Read and understand project drawings, grades, slopes, and specifications
Work with survey/layout and use GPS systems (Topcon or similar), laser levels, and grade controls
Ensure work is completed to line, grade, and tolerance
Safety & COR Compliance
Conduct daily tailgate / toolbox talks in accordance with COR requirements
Enforce safe work practices and correct unsafe behaviour immediately
Ensure crew compliance with company and site-specific safety policies
Requirements
Civil construction experience in Canada or the United States is required
5+ years experience in civil earthworks or excavation
Proficient operating heavy equipment
Strong understanding of grading, slopes, and earthworks techniques
Experience with GPS machine control and laser levels
Comfortable leading crews while performing hands-on work
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
Must be fluent in English — Spanish speaking is an asset
