WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
• Successful completion of a Secondary School diploma and Community College program/course in a related construction field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum five (5) years demonstrated experience in relevant construction inspection.
• Minimum five (5) years demonstrated experience in inspection of the construction and/or rehabilitation of highway structures such as bridges, culverts and retaining walls.
• Experience in interpreting structural engineering drawings and applicable specifications.
• Knowledge of contract administration and contract law.
• Knowledge and understanding of construction layout procedures.
• Familiarity with construction equipment/materials used in municipal construction.
• Knowledge of relevant legislations and standards.
• Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
• Demonstrated ability in the Region’s core competencies.
• Ability to prepare accurate and concise reports and records.
• Ability to operate survey equipment.
• Intermediate skills in virtual platforms and MS Office Suite and other software applications.
• Strong ability to develop relationships and working in a welcoming inclusive environment, where diversity is celebrated and where everyone can develop to their full potential
• Ability to physically withstand long periods of walking, standing and climbing and work in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Program Manager, Capital Construction Support, this position is responsible for inspecting construction projects to ensure conformity with contracts, drawings, specifications, regulatory requirements and applicable ordinances. Responsible for undertaking construction inspection for the construction and rehabilitation of highway structures such as bridges, culverts and retaining walls; interpreting structural engineering drawings, coordinating and ensure concrete quality control, checking rebar installations, overseeing concrete placement and installation and assembly of culverts.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
• Observes each stage of work performed for standard of workmanship and materials used and reports observed or suspected discrepancies.
• Ensures that construction procedures are carried out according to plans, specifications and standards and that municipal consents and applicable permits are valid.
• Checks measurements, productivity, locations, and other relevant specific construction details.
• Arranges for relevant testing of materials and ensures that relevant tests are carried out by consultants/vendors and evaluates the results for acceptance.
• Observes installation and testing for compliance with applicable safety regulations.
• Issues appropriate action memos to contractors, when necessary, to enforce terms of contract.
• Checks and reports upon deviation from Occupational Health and Safety standards by the contractor.
• Examines workmanship of finished installation ensuring Final Inspection Check List is completed.
• Completes regular and special reports, forms and check lists for record and control purposes.
• Documents and immediately notifies of any observed deficiencies related to safety and compliance, Occupational Health and Safety or other applicable legislation.
• Investigates complaints and responds to questions from property owners regarding work to be carried out on or in front of their property.
• Responds to inquiries and investigates concerns, as appropriate, from the public etc.
• Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards
• Participates on committees, work groups, task forces and special projects, as assigned.
• Manages information in accordance with legislation and corporate standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives
